2010 Diversity Action Award
It is the practice of the American Dietetic Association to promote, financially support, implement, monitor and update diversity action practices and procedures in all their aspects. Guided by the principles of equal opportunity and non-discrimination and a comprehensive diversity action program, the Association seeks to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the national Association, Affiliate dietetic associations, professional leadership, and staff.
The American Dietetic Association has established the Diversity Action Award to recognize significant accomplishments of a dietetics education program accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, Affiliate dietetic associations, dietetic practice groups, and other recognized Association groups in increasing and improving recruitment, selection and support of ethnic minorities and males in the institution or association’s activities. The Diversity Committee will administer the application process and annually recommend a recipient to the Honors Committee of the ADA Board of Directors.
Applications should address successful recruitment, retention, or leadership development of at least one of the following underrepresented groups:
- Black (not of Hispanic origin)
All persons having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. - Hispanic
All persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. - Asian or Pacific Islander
All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, and Samoa. - American Indian or Alaskan Native
All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation of community recognition. - Male
Requirements for Submitting an Application
- The application should include the following components:
- application form
- abstract
- documentation of criteria
- The application should be based upon student or member population data and accomplishments in the area of diversity actions.
- Original and six (6) copies of the application must be submitted to:

Chicago, IL 60606 - The application will be treated as confidential, privileged communication. All copies of the application will be used by ADA and will not be returned to the applicant.
- The award recipient agrees to share program/project information with other Association units, as appropriate. This can be done at Association meetings, through publications, newsletters and electronic communications.
- Application deadlines are on the application form.
Eligibility Requirements:
- CADE accredited/approved dietetics education programs,
- Affiliate dietetic associations,
- ADA dietetic practice groups,
- ADA member interest groups,
- Other recognized Association groups
Criteria
- Successfully increase the number of underrepresented students or members participating in the education program or Association’s organized activities. (35%)
- Provide an academic or professional atmosphere that nourishes and encourages students or members from underrepresented groups successful participation in Association or educational activities. (40%)
- Serve as a model and/or resource for other dietetics education programs and Association’s organized units in the area of diversity. (10%)
- Ongoing support for diversity efforts and accomplishments. (15%)
Diversity Action Award
- $1,000.00 will be awarded to an educational institution, Affiliate dietetic association, dietetic practice group, or other recognized Association group in recognition of past accomplishments unless the Honors Committee determines that there is no program that merits the award.
- An educational institution, Affiliate dietetic association, dietetic practice group, or other recognized Association group is eligible to receive the award only once.
- A peer review process will be used to judge the best application. Applications will be scored based on the criteria.
- Award recipient will be recognized in the ADA Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo program book and other Association publications.
