2010 Diversity Promotion Grant

The American Dietetic Association Diversity Promotion Grant provides $10,000 to support minority recruitment and retention projects by dietetic education programs accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, Dietetic Practice Groups, ADA Affiliates, and Member Interest Groups. The ADA Diversity Committee will administer the grants process and select the recipient.

Proposals should address recruitment and retention of at least one of the following underrepresented groups:

  • African-American or Black (not of Hispanic origin) — All persons having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.
  • Hispanic or Latino — All persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.
  • Asian or Pacific Islander — All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands.  This area includes, for example, China, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, and Samoa.
  • American Indian or Alaskan Native — All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation of community recognition.
  • Male

Eligibility Requirements

  • Institution: Sponsor of a dietetics education program accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education.
  • ADA Affiliate, Dietetic Practice Group or Member Interest Group.
  • Project Director: RD who is an Active member of ADA. Members of the Diversity Committee and the ADA Board of Directors are not eligible to apply.
  • Project Director must submit a progress report 6 months after the grant begins and a final report as indicated in proposal. 
  • Project Director must agree to share results with dietetic educators, affiliates, dietetic practice groups and member interest groups as appropriate.  

Requirements for Submitting Project Proposals

  1. The proposal must be for a recruitment/retention project that focuses on ADA’s designated underrepresented groups.   
  2. If the proposed project requires other sources of funding to support the project, these should be indicated.
  3. The proposal should include the following components: title page, abstract, objectives, demographics of area and underrepresented group(s) targeted, rationale, methods, expected outcome, short-and long-range evaluation plans, description of available resources and plan for continued funding, description of any institutional recruitment/retention program, biographical sketch of project director, budget, and timeline.
  4. The proposal should be no longer than ten (10) double-spaced pages. This includes all components listed in point #3, i.e. the title page, abstract, project budget page.
  5. Original and six (6) copies of the proposal must be submitted to:

  6. The proposals will be treated as confidential, privileged communication. All copies of the proposal will be used by ADA and will not be returned to the applicant.
  7. The deadlines will be specified on the Application Form.

Award
Projects will be funded for up to $10,000. A peer review process will be used to judge the best proposal. Proposals will be scored based on the following criteria:

  1. Project merit (50%)
     — Recruitment or retention strategies leading to an increased presence of underrepresented groups
     — Atmosphere created that nourishes and encourages students or members from underrepresented groups to become involved in the profession and Association activities
  2. Feasibility (20%) 
    — Networks
    — Ability to accomplish in designated time frame; human resources needed
  3. Commitment of sponsorship organization to support program (20%)
  4. Appropriateness of budget (10%)
