Aging
Nutrition plays multiple roles in maintaining a high quality of life as we age. As primary prevention, nutrition helps promote health and functionality and affects the quality of life in older adults. As secondary and tertiary prevention, medical nutrition therapy is an effective disease management strategy that lessens risks from chronic diseases, slows disease progression and reduces symptoms. ADA has designated aging as a priority area for its advocacy program, supporting efforts that allow dietetic professionals to use their unique training and skills to help older adults remain independent longer, and better manage their health. With a focus on practice, progressive policies can better addresss the needs of older adults.Child Nutrition
Objective: Improve nutritional offerings to children. Maintain local school, wellness policies. Raise visibility of ADA members' knowledge, skills and talents in their communities.
Food and Food Safety
Objective: Increase knowledge and encourage actions that overcome threats to the safety of the food supply. Increase opportunities for RDs and DTRs in food safety and management. Improve consumer protections in and information about food, food ingredients and dietary supplements. Improve food, beverage and nutrition labeling for health professionals and the public.Health Literacy and Nutrition Advancement
Objective: Improve the nutritional status of Americans and make this a higher national priority. Increase access to and awareness of safe and healthful foods in food assistance initiatives. Increase nutrition education for all. Support continuous efforts to make the Dietary Guidelines for Americans more central to our national understanding of food, nutrition and health and the guide that Americans choose to follow in making dietary and physical activity decisions.- Task Force Report on Restaurant Nutrition Labeling Research

Medical Nutrition Therapy and Medicare/Medicaid
Objective: Cover hypertension, dyslipidemia and other diseases and disorders in Medicare — as well as conditions such as pre-diabetes. Successfully implement Ryan White HIV/AIDS care programs to maximize the impact of nutrition care and services. Increase utilization and payment rates for MNT services. Seek MNT expansion in more public and private programs.
Nutrition Monitoring and Research
Objective: Improve and expand nutrition research and related activities. Fund NHANES. Protect the program of work of the ARS and its Human Nutrition Research Centers, and increase federal investment in food, nutrition and health research.
Obesity/Overweight/Healthy Weight Management
Objective: Put dietetic professionals on the front lines in addressing overweight and obesity in all populations. Gain coverage for MNT.
